Summer Sport in Melbourne

Get ready for an exciting summer in Australia's sporting capital!

C'mon Cricket

Have you got your green and gold outfit ready? Because Australia is facing India in the Boxing Day Test (26–30 December) at the MCG. It’s going to be a huge game with both teams, who just happen to be fierce rivals, in good form going into the summer. The last time the Australian women’s team met the England women’s team at the MCG was for the final of the 2020 ICC Women’s World Cup. Now, they’re set to make history in the Women’s Ashes (30 January – 2 February), the first women’s day-night test match.

Ocean Views, Racing Vibes

It’s been a highlight on the cycling calendar for 10 years, so celebrate one of our most egalitarian events, the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race (1–2 February). While the professionals will be competing in the elite road races, there are two events – the Family Ride and People’s Ride – for part-time pedallers. It’s a big anniversary, too, for the Festival of Sails (25–27 January). This event debuted in Geelong 180 years ago. Now, the regatta has a wide variety of race classes suited to every sailor. Plus, there’s plenty of fun back on land for those who prefer spectating to sailing.

Courtside to Coastline

One of the biggest events of the year, regardless of whether you’re a tennis fan, is the Australian Open (6–26 January). Head to the stands, get a player’s autograph or grab some lunch and catch the action at Grand Slam Oval. This year, you can get there easily because the Free Tram Zone is extended throughout the event. The roar of the crowd is only dimmed by the roar of the motorcycles at the FIM Superbike World Championship (21–23 February) on Phillip Island.
