Eats and drinks in Melbourne

From quick bites to date nights, Melbourne has your culinary cravings sorted.

A quick bite

If you’ve just touched down in Melbourne and you need to head to the city, jump on a SkyBus, departing every 10 minutes direct to the city centre. When you get there, head to cult burger chain Five Guys which has just opened at QV. Start with two patties (hand-shaped and always fresh) then add whatever it takes to create your dream burger. Their signature buns stand out too, they’re made to the same recipe as when the first store opened in 1986. Fans claim they’re the best in the world.

Looking for a nightcap? Aster is a cocktail and wine bar, focused on signature mixed drinks like the spicy coco marg. There’s also a menu of classic snacks when hunger strikes.

On the roof

Located on level 12 of Melbourne Place, discover Mid Air, where chef Nick Deligiannis is dishing up fare inspired by Spain, Turkey, Greece and Italy. Weekend brunches on the terrace are especially popular.

Be transported to the streets of Havana at Fidels. Sure, this Cuban restaurant at Crown Melbourne is beautifully designed, but nothing beats the views of the Yarra from the elevated patio. Especially when you’ve got a Caribbean-style cocktail in hand.

Head upstairs at Hardware Lane and find a spot on the rooftop at Hotel Nacional, a new Mexican-inspired bar and restaurant. Good news for coeliacs – the entire menu is 100 per cent gluten-free.

Date night

If you’re looking to impress, the Eureka 89 Altitude Dining Experience offers an incredible fusion of fine dining and good fun. You’ll enjoy the spectacular views of the city from Melbourne Skydeck, 300 metres above the ground, check out the VR Experience then head another level up for a three-course meal created using the best local ingredients.

For a classic European bistro experience, book a table at Elio’s Place. Open from breakfast till late, this stylish 90-seater with walnut panelling and checkerboard tiling has a menu of crowd-pleasers, all of which you can share.
